What is EWI(External Wall Insulation)

Homes which have been built before 1920 are built with solid wall; this therefore means that they let out vast amounts of heat which results in your property being inefficient and expensive. As a solid wall has no cavity, it is therefore impractical to pump insulation into the walls. The only way to insulate a solid wall is to have either internal or external wall insulation. Solid wall insulation, involves the mechanical and/or adhesive fixing of insulation boards to the outside of a building. The next steps are to then cover this with mesh reinforcement, a base coat and a final decorative finish, which can be textured or of a smooth render in various colours, brick slips or dashed render.

  • Extends the life span of the property from around ten to fifteen years.
  • Cracks, gaps and holes are all filled, blocking draughts and preventing further loss of heat.
  • Preventing heat loss means the heating system would be used less, thus helping the household to save up to £365 a year on energy bills.
  • A cost effective alternative to demolition & rebuild.

The cost of installation can vary depending on the type and size of the property. On average it costs £8000 for a Mid-Terrace property, £10,000 for a Semi-Detached property and around £12,000 for a Detached property. With the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund you can get up 75% (max cap is £6000) of cash back which consequently makes the external wall insulation more affordable. You can pay the outstanding amount of money upfront or by opting into the Green Deal Finance scheme.

Time to Install

The time period for the insulation to take place is on average 5-7 days. This however may vary depending on the size of the property and also weather conditions. Installation process The first step is to remove all the ‘building furniture’ from your walls, i.e. satellite dishes, aerials and vents. The insulation boards are fixed to the building which are coated with adhesive and a reinforcement product. Finally, a render finish is applied to the walls, so the property looks new again and the ‘building furniture’ is then refitted.

What to Do Next?

It is first important to identify whether the property requires installation and if so the work can be carried out. To begin with, a survey and a Green Deal Assessment will be carried out on the property and an install date will then be fixed at your convenience. If you already have a Green Deal Report which recommends solid wall insulation then we can book an installation date and carry out the work accordingly. Get in touch with one of our advisors and we will make sure the process is completed quickly and efficiently.

If your property was built pre 1920’s, then the chances are you will have a solid wall. From the pattern of the brick walls you will also be able to identify whether you have a solid or cavity wall. Maybe a PICTURE of Solid wall brick pattern? Another way to identify a solid wall is by checking the thickness of the external wall; if it is less than 50mm then it should be a solid wall. Before any work is carried out a survey will be carried out to ensure that the property is made from solid walls.

  • Reduces the level of CO2 emissions from the heating system, not only making it good for the environment, but also reducing the carbon footprint from your property.
  • Improves the exterior appearance of the building due to the soft glow of the high-performance protective coating which further prevents cold air permeation.
  • Creates a sound-proof barrier which allows the household to enjoy a bit more peace and quiet in the comfort of their own home.
  • Under certain government ‘Green Deal’ initiatives, there is a possibility that you might not even have to pay anything up-front, therefore reducing the overall external wall insulation cost of your home.
  • Reduces condensation

Free replacement for old boilers is available under ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme. It offers free survey and if the boiler is approximate more than 8 years old. It offers free replacement with A-rated condensing boilers. In non mains, the replacement is allowed for LPG/Oil boilers. It is an initiative by affordable warmth to lower down energy bills cost of lower income households.

We are certified for insulation services like cavity wall, external wall and loft insulation. We work under ECO (Energy Company Obligation) schemes which offer free funding for few wall and loft insulations.

We offer cavity wall extraction process that includes removal of previous improper installation instances from wall cavities. Improper instances occur due to unexpected circumstances or selection of wrong property type.
